Rebel Town

Known as ‘The Most Rebellious Town in Devon’, Colyton was one of the main areas of dissent when in June 1685, 105 local men and boys famously marched to support the Duke of Monmouth after he landed at Lyme Regis.

The dreadful aftermath when many perished at the Battle of Sedgmoor, the few survivors hunted down and brought before Judge Jeffreys for sentencing, followed by local hangings in Colyton.
